WHY IS LEARNING HISTORY SO IMPORTANT?

Life is interesting and can be mysterious. Certain things happen in life and after a period of time, the same event repeats itself and you wonder, why is this happening? You’re confused about the situation but you know it’s something to look into especially if it’s too accurate.

History is a very essential part of human existence. Nobody jumped from the sky. We all came from somewhere and will leave this earth when we have fulfilled our destinies on earth.

One great importance of learning history is to study a series of events and know what led to it so that when history repeats itself as it always said, you get to learn from the past. Sometimes People say “oh, it’s the past so just forget and think about the future. It’s irrelevant”. As much as the future is important but is this always true? Most times, the decisions made in the past determine the future of a society a great deal be it, Education so as to churn out graduates that would have acquired skill and knowledge to build infrastructure and cities, Politics so as to churn out a generation of responsible leaders to ensure the steady growth and development of society, culture so as to instill values and morals that will help to churn out responsible individuals from healthy backgrounds that will inspire others positively in every field of life and so on and so forth.

There are so many reasons why we must embrace history as a people because learning from the mistakes of our ancestors for the sake of the future generation is so important and can never be over emphasized. Overtime, I’ll discuss history ranging from politics, race, slavery, hair politics and others including uncomfortable discussions. As black people we must take note of these for the sake of our future generations.

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”—Marcus Garvey.
