As a young African growing up, i have seeing corruption become normalized for so long and even learning about its existence many years before I was born. As much as there are up to 195 nations recognized globally, each of them are classified into two main categories such as first world and third world. The first world countries include the developed nations with working systems like North America (USA and Canada), European nations, the Arabs and Asian tigers.
Though not every nation in every continent has great infrastructural development and strong political systems in place, some countries have risen to that point of being placed side by side with developed nations. For the African continent, we have South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria leading in terms of good leadership which has made them the most developed nations in Africa. There are still others like Rwanda, Namibia but sadly very few out of the 54 countries in Africa can consider themselves on that level and the reason is simple, corruption. One would ask, corruption caused by who exactly? Of course by our leaders because all they do is steal year in year out without any little effort to build the nations.
For decades since after our “independence”, there has been a gradual decline in economic growth over time in many African countries which has driven the masses into unending suffering with each decade that passes by and the question is, when will this all end? I won’t go deep into details in this topic but I want my dear readers to understand the simple point I am trying to pass and I’ll use Nigeria as a case study having grown up there. You have your leaders stealing from the masses and using the money to train their children abroad until they eventually settle down and become permanent residents. Your leaders get sick and quickly hop on the next flight to a country with good medical facilities while people perish everyday around you because either they don’t have the finances to fund their treatment or the hospital is barely equipped with the functional equipment to treat patients properly.
You drive on the road and you become vulnerable to armed robbery attack, Fulani herders and uniformed men. You go to market and prices of goods have increased yet the average citizen can barely secure themselves good jobs to feed well. Even to get the job, you will be given condition to either sleep with your employer or forget about the job completely. It’s the same in the university, randy lecturers demanding sex from students in exchange for grades or forcing students to either buy their handouts or fail. The first I heard that bs I wondered for a minute how that had got anything to do with passing exams. If a so called lecturer can fail people for not buying his/her handout rather than ensuring they read the materials as long as they can get soft or photocopies from their mates then the education system is a complete mess. A total mess!!!!
Let me not start with the inflation, tribalism, nepotism, recklessness from organizations or bodies that ought to ensure law and order. Is it the electricity issues or bad roads? The problems are even too numerous to mention and the average citizen is so choked with all these problems and decides to protest peacefully…..and what do they get, boom!!! Gunshots. The blood of innocent youths spilled yet again. Such was the case of the lekki toll gate massacre but even asides that there have been many other massacres not mentioned. From boko haram harassing people in the north to Fulani herders harassing people literally everywhere they go to uniformed men killing people. Let’s not forget that politicians are also a huge part of this mess as well.
There’s one thing about an oppressor. Anything that will make them remain oppressors, that they must do. Anything that would hinder their chances of remaining oppressors, that they must destroy. Despite all these suffering, the so called leaders don’t even have the heart to pity the people yet they keep stealing, killing and deceiving the poor masses and the people can’t protest for fear of getting killed but how long do we let heartless beasts mortgage our future and unborn generations. Anyone who benefits from your tragedies as a slave will never give freedom to you freely. You have to take it by force.
Africans, take your freedom by force!!!!
